Density
Density is the amount of matter in a certain space. A piece of wood , rubber, and glass all have density.
To find density you have to first find the volume and mass.To find the mass of an object you either use a Tripple Beam Ballance or a digital balance. There are more ways to find the mass but these two are the commonly used tools to find mass. To use a Tripple Beam Balance :
1.Make sure that the Balance Pointer is at the Zero mark, if not, use the Adjustment Knob or Thumb Screw to adjust it to Zero.
2. Place the object on the Pan.
3. Start by movint the 100g (Gram) weight/Riders.If it is too much, the Balance Pointer will not be on the zero mark. There are three weight 100g, 500g , and 10g.
4.Adjust the weight/Riders on the Beams until the Balance pointer is at the zero mark.
5. Add the weight and you will get the objects mass.
To use a digital balance or DB place the item on the pan and it will give you the mass.
If you are given the density and the volume, to find the mass you would use the formula M = D x V, Mass equals Density times Volume.
If the density of a diamond is 3.5g/cm3 and the mass is .5cm3, what would be the Volume ?
The volume would be 1.8g , because when you divide 3.5 by 5 it equals 1.8.

After you've found the Mass of the object, you will need to find the Volume of the object.
To find the volume of an irregular shaped object you will have to use a graduated cylinder.
1.Place the graduated cylinder on a flat surface.
2.Fill the graduated cylinder with water. Make sure that the amount of water that you put in the graduated cylinder is more than the object, the record the volume of the water by looking at the meniscus, the curve that the water makes.
3. Slide the object in from the sides to prevent any spills.
4.The water will rise when you drop the object in. If the object does not sink and floats than the volume is less than the volume of the liquid.
5. Subtract the new volume from the initial volume.
6. After you've subtracted the new volume from the volume of the liquid, the answer you get is the volume of the object by itself.
7. The measurement for the volume of an object is cm3.
There are some objects that are NOT irregularly shaped, a square for example or a rectangular shaped object. To find the volume of a regular shape object you would have to use the formula Lenght times width times Height, or L x W x H.
For example a rectangle has a width of 6cm a height of 5cm and a lenght of 6cm what is the volume of the rectangle? 6x5 = 30x6 = 180. Therefore the volume of the object is 180cm3 (3 is cubed ).
You can also use the formula V = M / V.
Now that you've found or are given the mass and the volume of the object you can now find the density. To find the density of an object we use the formula. D = M / V , or density equals mass divided by volume.
Example Questions : If a 96.5g of gold has a volume of 5cm3
what is its density ?
Answer : The volume of the gold is 19.3 g/cm3
